Record lows hit Georgia cities

ATLANTA (AP) — Record lows were set in several Georgia cities as fall-like temperatures descended on the state.

In Atlanta, a low of 63 degrees Sunday morning matched the coolest July temp recorded set in 1967. The National Weather Service also reported other lows in the central and northern portions of the state.

Columbus reported a low of 62 degrees — easily besting the previous record of 66 degrees set 22 years ago.

Macon and Athens each reached a brisk 58 degrees. The old record in Macon was 61 in 1967. In Athens, it had reached 62 all the way back in 1925.

The weather service says the norm for this time of year in that part of the state is in the low 70s.

Forecasters say cool, dry air could lead to more toppled records.
